Mummy’s not going to Cry – First day at school poem

New shoes, new coat peg, new way of life for us all

The Day is Here

The day that has been filling me with an uneasy fear

The day that marks a new school year and a new way of life for us all

One, where I’m no longer the only one to catch you when you fall

The day when I’ll for once, be hoping the hours fly by

But I promise you darling, Mummy’s not going to cry

The day is here

The day that I’ve been dreading all year

The day where I’ll be questioning if you feel lost or alone? And if you’re there wondering why you’re not with me, at home?

New shoes, new friends and a new peg to hang your coat on and me watching and wishing life could for one moment just “hang on”

I know these things will become our new norm as the days pass by

So, I promise you darling, Mummy’s not going to cry

The day is here

The day where I know I need to feel excitement for you, not fear

The day that I needn’t see as an ending weighing heavy on my heart, but instead as a wonderful adventure you’re about to start

It’s the beginning of you finding your passions, your dreams and all the answers to your what, where’s and why?

So, I promise you darling, Mummy’s not going to cry

The Day is here

The day where we walk through the school gates and you make sure to keep me near

The day where we pass through the playground bustle and big kids excited for the year ahead, and I ease you forward with a nod of my head

I help you with your coat, kiss your cheek and look you in the eye, and tell you that “You’ve got this”, “Mummy’s so proud of you”, “You are going to fly”

You look at me, turn and let go of my hand, leaving me a mix of pride and heartache where I stand

And as I watch you go, I remind myself you’re off to learn, to have fun and go far

So, I promise you darling mummy’s not going to cry, well, at least, not until I’m safely back in the car
