The Day is Here
The day that up until now I’ve been dreading all year
The start of a new week, a new term, a new way of life for us all
One where I’m no longer the only one to catch you when you fall
I feel sad and strangely bereft sat here hoping the hours between 9-3 will fly,
But I promise you darling Mummy’s not going to cry
The day is here
The day that up until now has filled the pit of my stomach with fear
Wondering will you feel lost or alone? Will you wonder why you’re not staying with me at home?
New friends, new faces, a new peg to hang your new coat on, life speeding ahead, with us all hanging on
I know all these new things will become less daunting as each new school day passes by
So I promise you darling Mummy’s not going to cry
The day is here
And I’m now starting to feel excitement for you rather than fear
You see, until now this day has felt like an ending, A finale that has weighed heavy on my heart,
However, I now realise that for you it is instead an exciting new start
Its the beginning of you finding your passions, your dreams and all the answers to your what, wheres and why?
So you see darling, Mummy’s not going to cry
The Day is here
And as we walk through the school gates, you make sure to keep me near
Hustle, bustle and big kids excited for the year ahead
I gently ease you forward with the gentle nod of my head
I help you take off your coat, kiss your expectant cheek and look you square in the eye, with my unspoken message of “You’ve got this”, “I’m so proud”, “You are going to fly”
You look at me, turn and let go of my hand,
You’re off to learn, to have fun and to go far
So, you see darling mummy did not cry……..
At least… not until, I was safely back in the car.
